On a faraway hilltop covered by dense foliage a group of riders watched the activity on the river bank with amusement, they had witnessed the destruction of the small Mercian force on the this side of the river then watched as the wounded Saxons were treated, knowing that it was a waste of time and effort as by dawn the next day the Saxon camp would be crushed under the fury of their assault. The Mercian lords turned to smile at the two men who had conceived this brilliant plan, who would have thought a monk and a cripple would have been capable of bringing about one of the armies most brilliant victories. Cedric and Aldrik nodded their heads in a gesture of acknowledgement towards the lords, treating them as equals secure in the knowledge that they were virtually untouchable having been given the protection of the Arch bishop himself who in turn advanced his career and esteem among the leaders of the church in the country, Cedric had even been mentioned in far off Rome where his success at converting the pagans had been applauded by the highest authority.

Aldrik formulated a plan, waiting for the right time to set the wheels in motion and that time came shortly after mid-winter. Lord Rangnar had recently converted to the new religion when he married a prominent merchant’s daughter, her family being fervent followers of the faith. Lord Rangnar had also incurred the wrath of his fellow lords by taxing their subjects bordering his lands before they could,
